Poll numbers will tell the tale

I posted recently regarding the UAE port deal and the fact that the liberal wing (or most of them anyway) of the Democratic party is coming out against it. I have followed the various statements made by both sides of the aisle and I stand by my original assertion. During an election year, this could be a gold mine for the left if they work it right. Firstly, they were the first to yell "Fire", always a plus, secondly, our Republican president has become defensive, if adversarial when confronted with the concerns of the congress and now I am sure much of the American public. National Security has been our political ace in the hole for quite a long time now, my guess is there are some right wing hearts a racin' on the beltway this week trying to figure out what direction that Mac truck came from and how they didn't see it before they were all political road paste. Think about it, even if Bush changes his mind, it is just that, at best. Agreeing with the left's original assertion that it was a bad idea. If he continues on his present course of making threats and vigorously defending this deal the damage could get much, much worse. In my mind the best thing Bush and we conservatives can do is to let the Democrats scream bloody murder and hope that (as they often do) they will overshoot the runway completely and end up making asses of themselves on an issue they could have won very handily. To be more clear, yes we think the port issue is a bad deal, no we do not want our ports controlled by an Arab state run company. But the facts are definitely not all in just yet, there may be more to this story than meets the eye. Let Congress do their investigation and if the findings are as many people now believe, (conducive to this deal being a horrible idea) then we will have to take it on the chin and move on. If, however, there is something we are all missing, and this deal turns out to be legit, the screams of the left turn out to be a political red herring. Then they look really stupid for jumping to conclusions and we look at best the concerned party who wanted more info, and at worst, in a rush to put a legitimate deal through without going to congress for approval. Either way in the end the polls will tell the tale. I would love to be a fly on the wall at Gallop in a month or so when this all shakes out.
