I Hate to Say I Told You So...
But I told you so! All Partisan quipping aside, we got our arses handed to us last night and we deserved to lose every one of those seats. Over the next two weeks you will hear a lot of people try to spin this loss to fit their own ideas but the bottom line is the American people sent Republicans to Washington to fight for their values and they just didn't. From same sex marriage, to immigration, to ethics reform and spending, earmarks, abortion, on all of the big issues conservatives care about, both the house and the senate fell well short on all counts. As I heard Ann Coulter say over and over again, they (republican congress) had the upper hand, they had the majority, and they were afraid to use it. Why? Likely for fear of not being re-elected...uh, yep... that worked out well huh? To be frank we had a bunch of luke warm conservatives in Washington this past term and the voters effectively spit them out. As God's word says, "I would rather you be hot or cold, but as it is you are luke warm and I am going to spit you out of my mouth." Or as another good old saying goes, "You can'ts pleases all da' peoples alla da' time, but you better please your base dummy". Or yet another saying that seems poinient today, "You can't serve two masters". Unfortunately, our republican majority tried to do just that.
You will hear Democrats screaming about this election being a referendum on Iraq. Well, it was, but that is not the story. The story is that by the republican congresses failure to accomplish anything of note, or give their base a rallying cry by at least clinging to the value that put them in office to begin with, "we" made Iraq the story of this election. We handed it to them on a silver platter. We had nothing to point to and say, "this is why you should put us back in office again". This was a sad election not only because we (republicans) have had to face some hard facts, but also because it was not about the issues. The democrats mantra was "a vote for change", and ours was, "ya' were lame, but at least were not Nancy Pelosi". What kind of platforms are those??
The news is not all bad, for those faithful of us in the conservative movement can take from this a referendum on our core values. That putting people in office just to have a butt in the chair with an R next to it, we will not except any longer. But as I heard Laura Ingraham say this morning, (I'm paraphrasing) we need strong, true, action oriented conservatives in office that would as soon lose as compromise their values to keep a seat. So, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move forward from here. Oh and do say a little prayer for our country while your at it, last night when I heard Nancy Pelosi's speech I half expected the frame to freeze and Rod Serling to come walking out with a cigarette and tell me I was in the Twilight Zone... dumdumdumdumdumdumdumdum Bah NAH NAAAAAAA, Babababababum.
